Kieran Kichuk

Kieran Kichuk

Kieran Kichuk was born on November 19, 1995, in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. However, he did not spend his early years there as his family relocated to San Diego, California, USA, when he was still an infant. The Kichuk family lived in California for five years before moving back to Canada, where they settled in Markham, Ontario.

Sports played a significant role in Kieran’s childhood, thanks to his father, a former national-level track athlete and NCAA Division 1 runner. His father’s athletic background became the foundation of the family’s active lifestyle.

While none of the four Kieran Kichuk siblings were pressured to compete, running became a family tradition. This environment sparked Kieran’s interest in athletics, leading him to pursue track and field events. He specialized in the 1500-meter run and cross-country, competing at regional and provincial levels.

In 2009, inspired by George Saint Pierre’s accomplishments in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), 13-year-old Kieran began training in martial arts, starting with Muay Thai and jiu-jitsu. After six months, Kieran chose to focus exclusively on grappling, eventually leaving the high school track team to join the school’s wrestling program. This decision led him to compete at the provincial level in wrestling as well.

Kieran’s first jiu-jitsu coach was Steve Lin, a black belt who played a pivotal role in his development, guiding him from white to brown belt. In 2010, Lin’s gym became affiliated with Team Lloyd Irvin, allowing Kieran to connect with Lloyd Irvin and his renowned competition team, “Medal Chasers.”

In late 2017, Kieran began training under Fernando Zulick, also known as Gringo. Zulick ultimately awarded Kieran his black belt on December 20, 2020.
